Rosemount is a city with a population of 21,874, fifteen miles south of the Twin Cities and the International Airport. Rosemount was established as a township in 1856 and incorporated as a city in Dakota County in 1972, encompassing the old village of Rosemount and Pine Bend.
Rail, air, barge and freeway access provide Rosemount's thriving economic community with an excellent transportation system. Four major highways link Rosemount to Minneapolis/St. Paul, and is home to the Pine Bend Refinery, which is the largest oil refinery in Minnesota and the one of the largest in the United States.
A major portion of the city is part of Independent School District 196, which is one of the largest districts in the state. Twelve non-public schools also offer education or preschool through grade 12. Dakota County Technical College, one of the largest technical colleges in Minnesota, is also in Rosemount. Rosemount has 302 acres of land for 23 parks, bordered by the scenic Mississippi River. Rosemount also contains 270 acres of the Spring Lake Regional Park Preserve.

Apple Valley's first town meeting was held on May 11, 1858 in a home near the area that is now Westview Elementary School.
The name "Burnsville" is attributed to an early Irish settler and land owner, William Byrne. His surname was recorded as "Burns" and was never corrected.
Farmington is home to three properties listed on the Register of Historic Places for Dakota County: the Daniel F. Akin House, the Church of the Advent and the Exchange Bank Building.
On the south metro fringe, Lakeville is one of the fastest growing cities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
Prior Lake features many recreational amenities including more than 54 parks, over 100 miles of trails and sidewalks and 14 lakes.
